Comments:
The hospital overall was wildly disorganized, chaotic, run-down, and dilapidated.
General nursing orientation was unreasonably demanding: hours of online pre-orientation modules, an unfriendly clinical orientation team, and very detailed medication calculation, ACLS/EKG, and cardiac arrhythmia tests- that would immediately cancel your contract if failed, even as a labor and delivery nurse.
As to the labor and delivery unit; staff was overall unwelcoming, rude, and unhelpful to travelers. Cliquey, resentful towards travelers, and rank with chaos, mismanagement, and favoritism.
Change of shift was absolute chaos, with no pre-shift attendance, huddle, or briefing, and assignments often not made until 15-30 minutes into the shift. If a nurse was absent, the charge nurse would often be unaware, until someone had no one to give report to and thus could not go home.
Charge nurses routinely gave travelers and new-grads two-patient active-labor assignments, regardless of labor stage, parity, acuity, or complications, while staff nurses sat idle, snacking and gossiping, with light or no patient assignments, refusing to help.
If one of your two labor patients delivered, often no one would assist your other patient during the delivery and recovery, aside from maybe charting a strip or two.
The second nurse present for delivery was considered the “newborn transition nurse” and offered no assistance with the delivery or clean up. Often, they would not even report to the room in time for the birth.
Once there, they would exclusively complete newborn tasks, and unreliably at that; infant vital signs and breastfeeding assistance were often delayed or skipped altogether. As the mother’s nurse, you would receive little to no communication on the baby’s status, and report was called up separately on baby, to a nurse “taking over” from another floor, even as you still were finishing recovery.
As to the actual obstetrical practices and environment of care, most were abysmal. Inattentive and dangerous triage practices. Enemas (yes, enemas!) still routinely given to labor and induction patients on admission. Unsanitary, dirty, and run-down rooms and equipment. Ants regularly seen in patient rooms, even in the beds…
All this to say, my travel assignment here was the hardest time of my entire nursing career. Unless it’s changed drastically since 2023, I would recommend avoiding this contract at all costs.
