They will bait and switch you from the get go! They hire ICU nurses for an ICU or an ICU float position and you are pretty much then sent everywhere but the ICU. You will primarily be used for boarders in the ED. Sometimes you'll have critical care patients, but most of the time it's PCU or MS patients. You are also your own transport, so bring a back brace for these terrible old beds that don't drive. If you make it out of the ED, you will be sent to PCU or maybe ICU. The medical and CV ICUs are incredibly hostile to travelers. You'll get the worst, borderline dangerous assignments and staff will literally sit at the desk and eat popcorn rather than help you. Honestly, the ED and neuro PCU were the only units that treated travelers decently. Even then, staff purposely withheld N95 masks from travel nurses during COVID and instead made us share the same PAPR. With the ED putting stretchers with obviously sick patients in front of our pod, it's no wonder we all got sick. The staffing office is another nightmare... You might get a text telling you where to go before your shift. If not, plan on getting there at least 30 minutes early because you'll need to go upstairs to the staffing office in another tower, get your assignment, and then hoof it to the other side of the hospital for huddle. They are NOT accommodating for schedule changes or emergencies. My friend had a death in her family and was told that she couldn't call off and needed to find her own coverage. She did manage to find her own coverage, came back, worked a night shift and was cancelled right after she gave report. The area around the hospital is not safe. Two travel nurses had their cars stolen during this assignment and apparently that's par for the course.
