I was a charge nurse here, not a traveler, but I can tell you exactly how they had us use travelers. First, you will be hired directly by UCHealth because they don't work with agencies. That's so UCH can undercut your pay and blame the Colorado Sunshine and Ski tax. You might be promised ICU, but there are absolutely no guarantees. You can go a month or more without a shift in the ICU. Some of the med surg floors are rough and you will have 5+ patients . PCU is crazy, but the staff are generally kind to travelers. MICU and NTICU love and appreciate travelers! The way they do assignments is bizarre and you're likely to end up with the short stick. They all listen to a recorded report and everyone hurriedly calls dibs the minute the recording stops. No chosing based on acuity or safety. CVICU is... Your standard CVICU. IYKYK. Even if you're heart trained, they have to be absolutely desperate before they let a traveler touch a heart. Charge nurses are explicitly told by leadership to float and triple travelers first to keep staff happy. Travelers will float mid shift and sometimes to a completely different hospital. I've heard travelers floating three times in one shift, although that's not common. The CNO told me directly that it was her personal mission to eliminate travel nursing in her career, so let that information guide your choices accordingly. Colorado is a great place to visit, but a terrible place to be a nurse.
