I stayed at YNHH- St Raphael’s for an entire year and there is a reason. The money and the people. I worked 4 12’s a week. Pay was good. Most of the staff were good and treated travelers well. They appreciated the help because let me tell you this assignment is ROUGH. We were 6:1 almost daily with some occasional lower ratios but more often than not we had 6. It’s a large ER but a lot of your patients are in curtained rooms/hallways. And those patients can be critically ill patients. I often had ESI level 2’s in my hallways and even an ESI level 1 once. They do not put travelers in the code rooms or triage. But don’t you worry, I still had some VERY sick patients in my assignments that anywhere else would’ve gone to a code room. You will not get a lunch or break and they will expect you to say you did. Don’t let them bully you into that. You work for your money and if I didn’t get a lunch I’m getting paid for those 30 mins PERIOD. I felt like almost every shift I was in fight or flight mode. I was exhausted. But the staff and other travelers were incredibly supportive. The techs are some of the best I have ever worked with. They get their ish done and they do it well. Management in my opinion were pretty good. If I had issues they responded and were prompt. One day I needed to leave because of my pet and they made a way for me to leave and come back no problem. So I appreciate that. The newer docs are great there but the older ones are burnt out and downright rude to travel nurses especially. So keep that in mind for moral and communicative purposes. If you can stand up for yourself against disrespect you should be fine but it’s still annoying. People forget that we are a team. Overall, because of the travel friendliness and pay, I would return but I know what I’m getting into.

This is a tough ER with more hallway patients than rooms. Out of the 80+ permanent bed slots, 20 something are actual rooms and the rest are curtains or hallways. There's a lot of psych/detox in the hallway and the pts are constantly yelling at you and at other patients. There is never one moment without a patient being up in your face as even the desks with plexiglass are lined up facing a row of patients who can knock on the glass right in front of you. The staff is very nice and welcoming and there are some fantastic techs and doctors as well. You won't get to do any of the trauma or code rooms but they also don't allow staff who haven't been nurses for 2+ years to train in those rooms. You won't ever ever ever get a lunch break. Also I did 4x12s and they usually put me with 6 on in a row every 2-3 weeks.
