Out of all the hospitals I worked at, Yale and the CTICU were my least favorite units. I have never felt more unsupported or unappreciated by staff, management, and the APPs. The unit would frequently have unsafe assignments (no sitters for an active, combative patient) and when advocating for a change in assignment will make staff perform a 1:1 while still keeping the same assignment. When telling management of this, it was implied it was a Yale thing and that ICU level of care patients don’t need sitters. The providers at night would breathe down your neck constantly, scrutinizing your charting while making passive aggressive comments to other staff about your performance if you were behind. When asking them questions or bringing up issues, they would talk to you with an air of superiority and make you feel belittled. Equipment is old and outdated, in a sketchy part of town. Techs are next to useless, giving you attitude when asking for a basic turn or reposition - one came to work hungover and slept for four hours in the break room. Management will only care in regards to image, safety or policy clarification does not matter - a coworker asked for clarification about insulin management, to be met with hostility and “you should know.” If I had known this moving forward, I would have never taken the contract. I got floated to neuro icu once and did not mind that. CTICU cannot keep staff due to the culture and poor management. I would highly advise to keep away!
